Cronstedtite is a complex iron silicate mineral belonging to the serpentine group of minerals. Its chemical formula is Fe 2+ 2 Fe 3+ (Si,Fe 3+ O 5)(OH) 4. It was discovered in 1821 and named in honor of Swedish mineralogist Axel Fredrik Cronstedt (1722–1765). It has been found in Bohemia in the Czech Republic and in Cornwall, England.

Assocaited minerals include siderite, pyrite, sphalerite, clinochlore, and quartz. Cronstedtite Individual member mineral of the Serpentine group with a chemical formula of Fe2+2Fe3+(SiFe3+)O5(OH)4. Cronstedtite is not a common mineral but it is not extremely rare and Mindat lists 37 localities (2010). It was recognized as a species since about 1890. By far the best locality for specimens appears to be the Herja mine in Romania.

It shows to advantage the triangular pincoid terminations of the Cronstedtite crystals, which form an intergrown covering of rounded clusters with lustrous black colour.

Two samples of cronstedtite, a mixed valence serpentine with ideal formula {Fe 2 2+ ,Fe3+}[Si,Fe3+]O5(OH)4, have been examined by X-ray and neutron diffraction, thermopiezic analysis, magnetization and susceptibility measurements and Mössbauer spectroscopy. The conductivity is thermally activated, with activation energies of 0.25 eV in the basal plane and 0.37 eV in the perpendicular

Cronstedtite, a complex iron silicate, is one of the classic minerals forever associated with Wheal Jane at Baldhu, between Redruth and the city of Truro in Cornwall. The Cronstedtite forms triangular crystals, 1 to 2 mm across, jet-black with a bright reflective lustre, richly covering a 5 x 1.5 cm surface of grey Killas matrix.
